CLEAN SLATE TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT

What We Do

Clean Slate Training & Employment is a social enterprise that creates and supports paid work for people from groups that face barriers to employment. We work with homeless people, refugees, long-term unemployed people, those with mental health problems, disabilities or other histories that may cause employers to think twice. The business was piloted in the West of England but plans to expand to Wales and London and beyond through franchising. Clean Slate creates work opportunities in a number of ways:

Clean Slate Distribution - our first in-house enterprise

Our first in-house enterprise is Clean Slate Distribution. This project delivers leaflets and publications door to door, distributes tourist information across city centres, and provides mailing fulfilment (such as envelope packing) for a range of customers. Customers include housing associations (and we are looking at ways to employ their long-term unemployed tenants), regeneration projects and private publishing companies.

Clean Slate Employment - the flexible model

Job seekers who register with Clean Slate Training & Employment are on 'zero hours' contracts and paid by the hour for the labour they provide, mainly through Clean Slate Distribution. This flexibility enables our Temp Workers to work around the limitations of their circumstances.

This year , we will sign up 10 Employer Partners in the West of England who will utilise Clean Slate Employment as a temp agency, providing 'chunks of paid work' for people who mean business about getting into employment. It will be a partnership because we'll remain in the background to give both employers and Temp Workers any additional support that might be required during this transitional time. We are asking Employer Partners to pledge 100 hours over 12 months, to help us pilot this new agency business. [Read the latest news...]

Worklessness Research & Consultancy - 360 degrees

Clean Slate's unique experience on the ground, in providing paid work for so-called 'workless' people, is feeding into work with local authorities and national networks. Our growing body of work explores individuals' aspirations, the barriers they face and perceive, and adds to the debate on solutions that help unemployed people overcome barriers to paid work. We have found we are well placed to report with authority at all levels and from all perspectives and we hope to build on this work with other partners in the coming months. This informed approach comes at a time when, in the face of an economic downturn, central Government is increasing its focus on Local Authorities' plans for tackling worklessness and avoiding deepening iniquity between the 'haves' and 'have nots'.  [Take our Employers Survey here...]

Business Development Support - rolling up our sleeves

We know that many people who have been outside the employment market for a period of time may prefer to be their own boss. Many of the skills they have developed to make ends meet are transferable to running a business and Clean Slate wants to help. Although in the early stages of development, we plan to offer more than 'incubation services', rolling up our sleeves to provide back (and front) office support and be active partners in the success of the micro-enterprises.

Clean Slate Training - the nuts and bolts

On the Job is the first training product on offer from Clean Slate Training. It is a pre-employment training and personal development programme helping job seekers see the skills they already have and sharpen up their work aspirations. With practical outcomes including a CV, familiarity with Word, email and the internet, paid work and a structured system for planning personal development, On the Job has proved popular and successful.
