TURNING UP THE TEMPS - THE BRIDGE OUT OF WORKLESSNESS

Clean Slate Employment, the temp agency for people on Incapacity Benefit taking their first steps back into employment, is now open for business in Bristol and Bath. We're recruiting Temp Workers who mean business about engaging with services to gain paid employment. Opportunities on offer are just a few hours a week to start, allowing people to earn while on benefits, building up their skills, confidence and proving their dependability until they are ready to move on.

Clean Slate is also seeking Employer Partners in the West of England who are committed to the community and need some temporary staffing support. You may need reception cover, a 'go-fer' in maintenance, or someone to send out emails to customers. We carefully match our unemployed temps to the work available to find you someone reliable while providing workers with a chance to get a foot on the ladder.  [More about Clean Slate Employment]

PIGS SET TO FLY - GOODIES PROMOTING FINANCIAL INCLUSION

Clean Slate's partners at Quids in! magazine have developed new resources to support financial inclusion events across the UK. Cheekily renamed Quiddy Banks, savings charts, healthy saver postcards, latchkey rogue trader advice stickers and back issues of Quids in! magazine are now available for pre-order to planners of financial inclusion events in 2010.

In 2009, Quids in! visited a number of financial inclusion events supporting local communities. A recurring theme was how each organisation felt it was having to reinvent the wheel, each time with greater or lesser success. Organisers also reported more appropriate merchandise to give away would encourage people to attend and increase the impact events made on people’s money management. Now Quids in! is launching merchandise to support these events. [Visit Quids in! News here]

PACKING UP AND DELIVERING ON OUR PROMISES

Clean Slate Distribution has generated over 5,000 hours of paid work for people who would otherwise have been excluded from employment. People with histories of homelessness, offending, or mental ill-health have benefited, as have other long-term unemployed people. Work undertaken to date includes packing of tenant newsletters for housing associations and putting together sexual health kits for Primary Care Trusts, as well as delivery of leaflets door to door and distribution of tourist information.

We are looking for fulfilment contracts from customers across the UK who want to support the effort to tackle worklessness. We can pack, collate or assemble all manner of non-technical materials - and would be happy to discuss more sophisticated, ongoing contracts. Or are you in the West of England or South London with a need for your leaflets, flyers or newsletters to be circulated promoting your services? If you wish your suppliers would offer more social return, then check out our keenly priced and professionally managed operation. [Read more about Clean Slate Distribution]

INSPIRED TO ASPIRE - RESEARCH THAT UNLOCKS POTENTIAL

Building on the last year's research in Bath & North East Somerset into the aspirations of workless people and the barriers holding them back, Clean Slate has developed an online resource to inspire Temp Workers to think about their future, their goals and the actions required to overcome obstacles. Feeding into our On the Job pre-employment training, job-focussed action plans and a forthcoming self-appraisal programme, the research will also prove instrumental for developing new in-house enterprises and for job matching through Clean Slate Employment.

Working closely with research professionals, Clean Slate continues to work with authorities and agencies who are committed to understanding and tackling worklessness in the communities they work with. Contact Jeff Mitchell here for further details. (Download Aspiring to More, the report on worklessness in Bath, from the side panel on the left of this page.)

A TON OF HELP FOR JOB SEEKERS

The first of Clean Slate's job search and job preparation centres has engaged over 100 people in Lawrence Weston, North Bristol. The shop premises has attracted job seekers, (most of whom have self-referred, walking in off the street), who want to grow their employability. Many enrol onto Clean Slate's On the Job pre-employment programme and immediately set to work on producing winnng CVs and getting themselves online to begin the application process.  (Download our service leaflet here)

The centre, funded by Bristol City Council, employs local jobless people and trains them to provide basic advice and support. It has also enabled Clean Slate to develop its 20-hour training package as a modular opportunity so learners can progress at their own speed, engaging in workshops on skills reviews, goal setting/ action planning and health and safety, while improving their IT skills and communications in the real world setting of job search. Clean Slate is in discussions with partners in Bath and South London and hopes to roll out similar opportunities in those areas in the coming months.

100,000 EXCLUDED HOUSEHOLDS NOW QUIDS IN

Clean Slate has been instrumental in the launch and publication of Quids in! magazine, the money management magazine for people on low incomes and its Autumn 09 edition broke the 100,000 households barrier. The edition maintained this staggering figure for the Winter edition, averaging 115,000 sales, with around 50 social landlords having adopted the easy-to-read 8-pager as a supplement to their tenant newsletters.

Managing Editor, Jeff Mitchell, said: “Quids in! was conceived during a meeting to discuss ways to tackle crime and bad practice on estates and in communities where people are looking for financial help but don’t understand the dangers of loan sharks and high interest borrowing. We knew information had to be very accessible and social landlords have recognised that by working together we've created a cost-effective way to meet the expectations about tackling disadvantage.

In a poll, over 90 per cent of readers said they were likely or very likely to follow advice they had read in Quids in!. [Read more about Quids in!]

About Clean Slate Training & Employment

Clean Slate Training & Employment was established in July 2006 and launched on 31 May 2007. We believe many socially excluded people are able to work and would do so if the right opportunities and support were made available. We believe that engaging in gainful employment can be a powerful way to overcome difficulties and grow independence.

Clean slate is a social enterprise and is currently funded through trade income (one third), from public sector contracts (one third), and through grant funding (one third). As a company limited by guarantee, its Membership takes a guardianship role to ensure Clean Slate does whatever it takes to achieve self-sustainability without diverting from its mission to create a level playing field in the labour market for people facing barriers to employment.
