In 2009, Clean Slate Training & Employment published Aspiring to More, a review into the job aspirations of workless people in Bath & North East Somerset and the barriers they face. The web-based survey model is available to local authorities and agencies that want a snapshot or longitudinal study of the needs of local groups or service users – the former being supported with a proportion of qualitative data obtained through interviews. A researcher-based variation of the survey has been developed for housing associations (conducted door to door) and agencies that want a more qualitative approach. As the survey has been trialled, new customers benefit from a rapid and cost-effective response to their needs, drawing on the experience of the research conducted for Bath & North East Somerset council. Clean Slate Training & Employment draws on its experience on the ground employing workless people as they work their way back towards the labour market. It also draws on many years’ experience in social enterprises responding to the challenge of what is now known as ‘worklessness’ – long-term unemployment often exacerbated by a history of homelessness, offending, mental illness or disability. The Clean Slate team have made themselves available to organisations developing their own worklessness projects. They are able to lend their experience with workless people and expertise in developing projects and, in particular, enterprises designed to create opportunities.
